The only part I disagree on is that this is not the point -- I think it's an important part of the point on both the boyfriend's assholishness and Abby's "why would be buy the cow if he can get the milk for free" ridiculousness. Treating a relationship of nine years with significant cohabitation like a trivial guest visit unless and until it is certified by the state is one of the mistakes boy BF and Abby made here.
