Columnist's advice isn't bad, per se, but my advice is better:
When your inlaws "announce" that they are coming to visit, call them up and announce that they are not, in fact, coming to visit.
Better yet - don't. Just make plans to be out of town during their visit and let them figure it out for themselves.
