I should add that I can also appreciate the boss's concern about appearances and sexual implications--but then, when I started work at my career company, my boss's boss was notorious for getting drunk at holiday parties and coming back to the office and trying to kiss every woman he could find. And not all companies have gotten past that mindset, especially those who still haven't promoted a lot of women.
