This was totally my dad, threatening to withdraw my college tuition and "make that kid get a fucking job" for any minor offense, real or imagined. *And* I had to pick my major off a "short list" of "approved" ones. Mostly STEM but I think he would have been OK with law or business had my interests and aptitude leaned that way.

I also think there's a good chance the parents are fucking narcissists who are less interested in their kid's success and happiness than in being able to show off their kid's M.D. degree as some kind of trophy for "winning at parenting".
