In the situation of the mistress with the apartment and school being paid for by the now-late husband, given the weird situation, I feel like the humane thing to do would have been to pay for the rest of the school year and the rest of the apartment lease, after having an emergency meeting with a financial counselor and a lawyer. Finishing those out would give the mistress and the kid a chance to catch their breath after the abrupt disruption, and in this case it appears the money is more than available.
Your response is much more humane. Given that LW was already estranged, had accepted that the mistress and child were his “active” family, and was feeling compassionate towards the situation, why not?
