THIS. I mean, I acknowledge how much breeding for show to over-exaggerate characteristics at the expense of the animal has screwed up a lot of dogs (and entire breeds to the point of body horrro), but the solution isn't to eliminate purebreeding altogether but fix the ridiculous standards and concentrate on what you said: removing genetic anomalies, pass on positive traits and eliminate negative, improve overall health, and improve the breed for the benefit of the individual dogs and breed. I also support responsible crossbreeding of compatible breeds by people who have devoted their lives to dog breeding, know what they are doing, and are assuring it is of benefit to the animals and not, well, Bulldogs Mark II.

We can't stop pet owners from getting dogs completely inappropriate to their homes and lives, but a good dog owner can evaluate their life factors and use those to select a companion animal from a breed that will thrive in those conditions, be it a small apartment in the city or a sheep farm down south.
