It emerged in the ensuing discussion that LW is in college, which I think lends context to 1) their thought that the employer doesn't know and 2) their rather .... dramatic reaction to having uncovered this fact about their coworker.

(That said Alison is totally right and the discussion was mostly people scolding the LW, who seems to have actually learned from it.)
