Dear Abby: Girls in leggings

DEAR ABBY: What's the deal with adolescent girls and young women wearing extremely tight and form-fitting yoga/workout pants? Last week, while I was leaving a smoothie shop, I held the door open for a young lady whose pants were so tight I could easily see the outline of her private area.

Yesterday, while I was waiting for my drink at a coffee place, a girl in her early teens walked in wearing similar attire. She was with her dad. In this situation I blame him. No father should allow his daughter to wear an outfit in public that leaves nothing to the imagination. These kinds of pants are designed for the gym, and that should be it. Your opinion? -- CONSERVATIVE GUY IN FLORIDA.

DEAR GUY: Obscenity is in the eye of the beholder. While it's possible these young women had just left their workout or yoga lesson, it's more likely they simply find the pants comfortable to wear. My opinion is you should direct your gaze above the beltline, Prince Charming. If their outfits were indecent, they wouldn't have been allowed inside the businesses.

Look, if it's not something the police would arrest someone for for indecency, it's no one else's business!

No nipples visible + no pubic hair visible + no genitals visible = mind your own damn business! (unless you're on a building site/laboratory/other site where clothing has safety implications)

Also: many clothes that are deemed ok on a thin woman magically become deemed indecent on a fat woman. LW may want to examine their inner fatphobia.

Also: perving on girls/women under the age of consent is CREEPY, LW.

Why can't people take responsibility for their own reactions? Sometimes I see happen to someone in tight clothing and I think "oooh!" but that's my eyes and my thoughts and not their responsibility.

(Unfortunately, I know the glum answers to my rhetorical question.)

Pretty much, yeah. I have taught young adults for 24 years, 8 of them in Arizona, where I saw the limits of clothing that could still be called clothing and not bandages. I managed not to ogle. Notice, maybe, but not ogle, and my reactions are on me.

...oh, god. I think I saw some of this guy's ilk featured on We Hunted the Mammoth a while back. *facepalm* Dude, your issues are your issues and women do not exist for the purpose of dealing with your issues. And I say this as someone who absolutely despises wearing tight clothing for reasons of both comfort and aesthetics and wouldn't want to wear yoga pants without something else over my lower torso anyway.
