It's entirely possible that LW2 really doesn't know. It's her daughter's choice whether or not to spell it out for her. But it's also possible that "small disagreements" were...not actually small, and that LW2 has been told already and just refuses to accept the information. (Something like, "Mom, please call me by the name I use. This is important to me." "Oh, don't be silly, Booger! You'll always be my Sugar Booger Chubby Cheeks!" [three months later] "She couldn't be mad about THAT, it must be a mystery.")
