This is a surprisingly common superstition - though I've mostly heard it from Jews, I haven't only heard it from them - and it's well-meant.

Huh! I believe you, though I've never heard this one. The one I know is not telling anyone the baby's name until after the bris (or the religious naming, if the baby isn't bris-eligible).
