I can see the argument that in a lot of cultures (including among a lot of White Americans) a wedding is a community affair, you're joining two families, therefore you naturally invite your whole community, which includes the people your parents are close to.
But even there, LW manages to flop badly by saying "my friends" instead of "our friends". (And if they're having a small church wedding then obviously they're not inviting the entire world, LW, what did you expect?)
