You know, this helped me articulate something about myself -- I also was a kid who panicked and melted down about losing, and experiencing it repeatedly didn't make me better ... but in other areas the messaging was "you can do/be anything you want", and academically I was pretty on top and that was a large part of my identity ... but speaking academically, if someone else gets a good grade, it doesn't affect my grade, whereas the same isn't true in competitive games. And I think I saw losing as failing.
