Yeah, LW needs to go to HR and explain the entire context of the conversation. It's okay to hate cats, it's okay to say you hate cats, but Joan's further comments strike me as insulting to someone who fosters cats in their personal time.

And unfortunately LW now has a target on their head with that reprimand, even if HR considers the matter "closed."
