What the columnist doesn't ask, and what I'm wondering, is if LW needed to step in at all. The kids are all between the ages of 6 and 9 years old. This is exactly the age they're learning how to manage their own social situations and problem solving.
Just because LW was there when Trent decided to switch instruments it doesn't mean that any of those kids wanted or needed LW to venture an opinion on the subject, and it's not at all clear to me that any of the children were upset prior to LW saying something - actually, the way LW writes this it sounds like LW jumped in to problem solve before it even became clear that there was a problem.
I guess that secondary issue isn't *that* crucial to this exact question, but it's bugging me.
