Yes, to all of this, to this whole thread, in fact. You want your kids to know they can ask for help if/when something does go wrong. And taking away cell phones for really long periods of time in the current "technosocial" climate is really just absurd, not least because the damn cell phone with the damn (privacy-invading IMO) location-finder that, at least in the US, always allows "emergency services" to find the cell phone, might be the thing that saves the day. (Given the publicly established habits of at least some law enforcement in the US, you can understand why I might be less than happy about the whole "Big Brother is watching you" element, but in this instance the parents are just not thinking this through.)
