Slate used "But if my girlfriend can’t even handle a sheepdog, how will she handle a baby?" as a promo line for this letter, so I was prepared to be pissed off. There is no way I could handle a sheepdog but I can aand have cared for babies, TYVM.
Then I read the letter and am indeed enraged, but on LW (and Abbie's) behalf, not at LW at ALL.
LW, DTAAN. There is NO EXCUSE for hurting a being in one's care no matter HOW frustrated one gets. Your girlfriend told you something really important about herself. Take yourself and Abbie far away from her. There are many people of any and all of your preferred genders who love dogs and can care for them.
I might have stupidly volunteered like Girlfriend did, when I was 20,or so, to "show my love", and gotten similarly in over my head, but I would NEVER have hurt the dog because that is WRONG and EVIL. Some things are off the table.
Last but absolutely not least: Advise-Giver Jenae, calling Girlfriend "psychotic" is ableist towards people with psychosis. Stop doing this, not least because it causes actual problems. You could have said she's unrepentantly abusive, which would have been more accurate.
