I have to wonder whether there isn't something that kicks in at 7 years' seniority that would lead the company to fire them short of that mark. Something like pension vesting or pension eligibility, for instance. Or that there's an unwritten policy of "up or out"—that someone who hasn't shown potential or interest for leadership or promotion in 7 years isn't deemed worth keeping around. Or that they're the most senior or highest paid in their role, and their manager has been told they need to cut somebody and the "most expensive" person is the one on the chopping block.
