That whole thing is just weird. "Cheated out of this opportunity," like splitting a brownie with ice cream is something rare and precious. Again, I could see it if they meant "cheated out of my favorite dessert that I only get once a year because we can't afford this place except as a rare treat," but that is really not the impression the words gave me.
