When I was ~7 or so, my father started a (nonprofessional) singinig quartet with a couple friends, including a lovely woman named Thelma who was a good friend of his. Thelma was also divorced.
When I was 13, the pastor's wife died.
When I was 15, the pastor decided he wanted to marry Thelma, and my father saw fit, in front of the whole assembly of deacons and elders, to remind the pastor that the church bylaws forbid the pastor from marrying a divorced woman because divorce isn't real and she's really still married because Evangelical Christianity.
Upshot: we got kicked out of the church. I never found out what Thelma thought of all this.
