The reason I was annoyed with the people helpfully saying "maybe he's from [demographic group here]" is that there are mistakes borne of lack of information, and then there is deliberate malfeasance. I have a hard time believing that it's a cultural value to ignore one;s boss's questions and ignore the multiple times one was told how to fill out the time sheet. I appreciate people trying to take different cultures into account but what they end up saying in a case like this is that POC, etc, are more likely to be greedy and entitled and insubordinate. That's... not actually helpful.
In the ensuing discussion quite a few people mentioned what you did, that a *big* meal that could be taken home made more sense as a behavior to mitigate food insecurity than ordering the most expensive meal available and extra drinks does.
