I found this question puzzling, because the pattern is clear and doesn't require explanation: this is a person who basically wants to take things and not pay anything for them. It's not like that's uncommon.
Some people don't do this because they're guided by a principle of fairness, and some don't do it because they're very sensitive to the social costs of it. But this intern obviously isn't motivated by principle, and the employer has proved over and over that there *isn't* any social cost, not even the discomfort of a direct face-to-face conversation, so he figures, why not?
It's annoying when someone takes more than his fair share, and maybe a bit of a head-scratcher for people who place more value on fairness, but it's not a mental illness or a baffling psychological mystery.
