Seriously, the USian "good enough" thing is why I can't bring myself to sing in front of people I'm not actively paying to listen to me (voice lessons). I'm a decent singer, I have a decent mezzo soprano voice, and I can't enjoy it the way I did as a kid before the kids on either side of me in 4th grade choir spent a year telling me how bad my voice was.
