Perhaps people don't realize that they really can't "work from anywhere" when they work remotely. I have a friend who works festivals. She has to register her company yearly at whatever state she is selling in to pay that state's tax. I figured that this is the similar rule. You work remotely, you have to pay that state's taxes. Do people not get this? (thinking of tiny house people who don't understand property taxes as another different type of example.)

A lot of people absolutely do not know. Some people don't even know that you can't just go and work from another country. Work from home equalling "work from outside the office" and "outside the office" contains the rest of the world. I honestly only know this myself about other states because AAM brings it up all the time, because it's so normal for me to have people work across state lines (ex: their job is in NY, they live in NJ and telework two days a week) that the idea that you can't just do that with any state doesn't register. If I live in Illinois, can I telework from Indiana? If I can do that, why can't I telework from Texas?
