Yeah, it's the "went straight to boss/HR" bit that has alarm bells ringing for me. Like, I wouldn't be happy never having any conversation that isn't strictly about work, or having to be rigidly formal, but okay, doable. But the fact that someone went to boss/HR at all, much less without letting the LW know that what she said was not in keeping with their culture would make me feel like I was standing in a field of landmines. I'd be a nervous wreck inside of a week.
