I consider it perfectly normal for teens to date their friends so I find it plausible that LW's son is dating his best friend. I'm a little dubious about him dating a "best friend," though. Admittedly, this guy really likes using quotation marks, so he might not be implying that the probable boyfriend somehow isn't the son's best friend.
