Teens have always known their parents are fallible; they watch for how the adults in their life handle being wrong, and follow that lead and/or protect themselves accordingly. It's going to take time and effort for dad to earn being shifted to the trust track, and how he handles his ego about being corrected and owning the hurt he caused is huge here.
