I thought he might have been throwing out reasons and trying to see if one would stick, because his "I don't want to live with a dog" was insufficient to convince the LW. OTOH, comparing that to his expensive hobby does make the "a dog's too expensive" bit at least somewhat hypocritical, and of course there are many ways to interpret/provide frameworks for what people say.
