My family used to use the scrub red cedars my father cleared out of the ditch as Christmas trees, largely because they were so unpleasantly prickly that even the cat didn't want to touch them. Having to wear heavy gardening gloves to decorate them was an acceptable price to pay for a tree that was free, mostly catproof, and intensely, gorgeously fragrant.
