You know, ironically, I was just having a conversation today in class about diversity in education (a student has chosen it as their research topic), and a lot of what's being discussed here came up. But the biggest thing we talked about is the diversity has to be a conscious effort. We talked about this in relation to The Last Jedi, actually, but it's definitely relevant in the classroom. I'm not...well, okay, I am going to judge a bit, but I've seen how something can blow up very badly. It's where he says they're not "complex enough" that he loses me.

(I was actually relaying this story, and just as I was giving his reasoning, a student said, "Hello? Mary Shelley, Frankenstein!" about three seconds before I could. I love my students.)
